Demystifying the will of God for your life.
When last did you ask God 'What should I eat for breakfast?' or 'What time should I take my bath?'. You will agree with me that praying like this is completely unneccessary and immature.
Although it is God's will that we eat good food (so that we're healthy) and take our bath regularly (so we don't smell like iniquity. lol), decisions regarding these things are up to us. Why? These things are not in any way relevant to his eternal agenda. Still on the same line of thought, imagine a guy asking God if it's ok to have sex with his girlfriend. Such a question is unnecessary and even disrespectful unto God because it is already clearly stated in the bible that fornication is a sin and that they who do such will have their part in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone.
While we are to seek the face of the Lord to know his purpose and will for our lives, there are certain things God will not speak to us about. This is because God's will has been clearly described in scripture as anything that meets the standard of good, acceptable and perfect (Romans 12:2). God has given us these testing standards that we may use them in making day to day decisions that are in accordance to his will.
What I'm trying to say is, there are some things regarding your purpose and the will of God for your life that God will not speak directly to you about. Having a brain, the word of God and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit alone is enough in many cases to act/take decisions that are in accordance to God's will.
Nevertheless there are some key decisions in life that we cannot take casually. There are times when we desire to hear God clearly regarding key issues like who to marry, where to settle, if you should start a business etc. However, God might not always speak in the spectacular way you want (eg. through an audible voice, a vision, a dream etc). Instead, in most cases, God will lead us on what to do through the inner witness.
Many christians are uncomfortable with the fact that God will speak to us in most cases through the inner witness.
Until we come to terms with the fact that most of the leadings we will get from God is through the inner witness, we will live most of our days thinking God does not speak to us.
There is a deposit of God in every man that functions like a spiritual compass that leads us in the direction of God's will. It acts like a magnet that is drawn in the direction of God's will. This spiritual compass is described in Philippians 2:13:
For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure (KJV)
This deposit makes us desire and want to do things that are in alignment with God's will. Thus one of the ways we can discern the will of God is through our desires. However, not all our desires are in alignment with God's will as most are from the flesh or our minds. Thus we must test every desire with the testing standards of Romans 12:2 to determine if it is truly God's will.
Also one effective way you can test if a desire you have is God's will is through prayer. Especially when this desire is connected to making a key decision in your life, it is important you take out time (extended periods if necessary) to sincerely and passionately seek the face of the Lord. If this desire is not in accordance with the will of God, you will have a check in your spirit. You'll hear some people say, 'I was not just comfortable in my spirit about it'. That's what a check sounds like. Once you discover an absence of peace and joy as regarding a decision you're about to take, it's most likely that that it's not God's will.
In the last article (Finding purpose and clarity 5), I stated that fellowship with God and hearing from him is the only way you can discover your specific purpose and so, I wrote this article purposely with the intent to give clarity to how God will reveal your specific purpose to you when you fellowship with him. If you truly commit to seeking God, he will reveal his will and purpose for your life to you but always remember that it may not come in a spectacular way.
I do hope you were blessed.
